What is a Christian?
A few years after the death and resurrection of Christ, men were traveling from town to town teaching about Christ and what He had done to make it possible for men and women to be forgiven for their sins and go to heaven when they die.
These men had been disciples of Christ or students of Christ’s. They followed His teachings and believed in who He was and what He did.
It was at that time followers of Christ began to be called Christians. A Christian is one who believes Jesus is God’s Son who came to this earth and lived a sinless life, that He loved us so much that by dying on a cross He paid the price for our sins.
In other words, before Jesus, forgiveness of sin always required a blood sacrifice. Beginning in the Old Testament, God required blood to be shed from a spotless lamb to cover the sins of man. This had to be done each year.
Jesus is our sacrifice. His blood was shed on the cross. Because of that, blood never has to be shed again for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus did it once and for ALL. Because of believing this, a person asks forgiveness for their sin and asks Jesus to be the Lord of their life. At that moment that person is forgiven and becomes a Christian – a follower of Christ.
That is the free gift God has offered to us in order to have eternal life with Him. All we have to do is accept it.
America was founded on Christian beliefs by a group of people who fled their country to have freedom of religion. They believed in the truth of God’s Word, the Bible, and wanted to be able to worship Him as His Word tells us to.
Even though America is known as a Christian nation, not everyone who is American is a Christian. Being born into a Christian family does not make you a Christian. Calling yourself a Christian does not make you a Christian. Only when you believe in what Jesus Christ did for you on the cross and ask Him to be the Lord of your life are you given the name, Christian.
John 3:16 “For God loved the world so much that he gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.
Becoming a Christian
Admit to God you are a sinner. Repent and turn away from your sins.
Romans 3:23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.
Believe that Jesus is God’s Son and that God sent Jesus to save people from their sins. Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead.
Romans 5:8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
Confess you want Jesus to be Lord of your life and commit your life to Jesus. Trust Him to be your Lord and Savior.
Romans 10:9, 10 & 13 If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved. For “Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.”
